Lozenges: a free lace knitting stitch pattern

Sometimes I start playing around with possible stitch patterns that aren’t based on my encoding methods. This is one of the results. I suspect this is the kind of stitch pattern that someone else might well have designed separately, but I haven’t seen it before. I called it lozenges because that’s another name for diamonds, and the paths made by the yarnovers make diamond shapes.

Notes:

• This is a stitch pattern such as might be found in a stitch dictionary. This is not a pattern for a finished object. You will need to add selvedges or some other form of knitted stitches to either side.
• Lozenges is a multiple of 10+1 stitches and 8 rows.

Abbreviations:

• k: knit.
• k2tog: knit 2 stitches together as if they were 1. (Right-leaning decrease)
• p: purl.
• ssk: slip each of the next 2 stitches as if to knit, then knit them together through the back loop. (Left-leaning decrease)
• yo: yarnover.

Row 1 (RS): *k3, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k2; work from *, k1.
Row 2 and all wrong side rows: purl.
Row 3: *k1, k2tog, yo, k5, yo, ssk; work from *, k1.
Row 5: *k1, yo, ssk, k5, k2tog, yo; work from *, k1.
Row 7: *k3, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k2; work from *, k1.
