Sarah: a charted design for any craft
Naming stitch patterns is hard. I suppose one can argue it’s not necessary, but it does at least help me search for things sometimes, and if someone wants to ask me a question about one, it can help to have it clear which one. Anyway, I sometimes name stitch patterns after people I know if I can’t come up with a better name.
This one is loosely inspired by part of the Kelpies charted design. The stitch and row counts are different, so it wouldn’t be easy to combine them, though.
Sarah is a counterchange design. I’ve seen a couple of different definitions for counterchange; what I mean by it is that it’s a two-color design where the dark pattern and the light pattern are the same. Artlandia has a page with some other examples, and some other examples too.

- Sarah has a repeat of 8 + 1 columns and 10 + 1 rows.
- In the written instructions, color A is the light squares above, and color B is the dark.
- The written instructions below are formatted for stranded knitting, but it is my hope that they could be translated into instructions for other crafts. For instance, if working filet crochet, 1A could be one open square and 2B could be two filled-in squares.
- Designers, please feel free to use this in your patterns (no need to ask). I’d like credit but won’t be offended if people don’t give it.
- My blog posts and stitch patterns are supported by subscriptions on Patreon or donations to my Paypal tip jar in the sidebar. If you appreciate my work, please consider helping out. Thanks!
