Fred: a charted design for any craft

Sometimes when I’m working on a charted design, one of my drafts that doesn’t get published will have a motif I like in it. I like to save those and play with them later. This is one of those motifs; it doesn’t look quite like the original.

If a pattern doesn’t have an obvious name, I’ve taken to giving it a random person name. The first name that came to mind this time was Fred. So here we are! (You don’t have to keep the name if you make a finished object with it, naturally.)

How the Fred charted design might look as knitting, drawn in yellow and grey. There are rows of motifs: rounded diamonds are cut in half and have a simple pattern that is darker at the bottom on one row and flipped vertically on the next.

  • Fred has a repeat of 8 + 1 columns and 14 rows. (It’s also possible to end after any row 7 without disturbing the pattern.)
  • In the written instructions, color A is the light squares above, and color B is the dark.
  • The written instructions below are formatted for stranded knitting, but it is my hope that they could be translated into instructions for other crafts. For instance, if working filet crochet, 1A could be one open square and 2B could be two filled-in squares.
  • This pattern is written in rounds, but because each row has mirror symmetry, the colors can be read in flat rows as written. If knitting, just work purl stitches on alternating rows instead of knit.
  • Designers, please feel free to use this in your patterns (no need to ask). I’d like credit but won’t be offended if people don’t give it.
  • My blog posts and stitch patterns are supported by subscriptions on Patreon or donations to my Paypal tip jar in the sidebar. If you appreciate my work, please consider helping out. Thanks!
